If you feel like seeing some culture on your holidays, Marbella itself has a beautiful old town with buildings dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, and historical churches and squares. If you have a car, you can visit Ronda, a scenic one-hour drive, where Hemingway used to go for inspiration. Ronda has an impressive old quarter, and boasts of having Spain's oldest bullfighting ring. Continuing on the road for another hour you will arrive in Seville, the capital of Andalucia. There you will find splendid architecture from Moorish times, like the Giralda or Torre del Oro. And Granada, with the Alhambra and Albaicin, and Cordoba, with its Cathedral (which used to be a Mosque when the Moors ruled Spain) are also just a two-hour drive from Marbella. Gibraltar, with its Barbary Apes and tax-free shopping, and Tangiers, gateway to Morocco, are also only a short trip away.

If your appetite is bored, Marbella has practically every cuisine represented in its vast array of restaurants. From typically Spanish fare to French, Italian or Japanese cooking, your taste buds will certainly not be spoiled for choice. Just nine kilometers from Marbella lies Ojen, a picturesque mountain village with incredible views of the coast. Istan, Coin and Monda are all within twenty minutes from Marbella and in these little mountain villages it is still possible to catch a glimpse of rural life in Spain, and to buy authentic handicrafts.
